Favourite Witches and Wizards in Film and Fiction

Everyone has their favourite fantasy and witches and wizards in film and fiction, today I thought I would share mine.

Favourite Witches and Wizards

Gandalf from Lord of the Rings

Up first, is the J.R.R. Tolkien creation made particularly popular by Ian McKellan’s performance in the Peter Jackson films. Whether you’re a true Tolkien fan or a fan of the movie, Gandalf is a brilliant character. Just the right side of realistic for a fantasy wizard.

Sally from Practical Magic

Next up, is Sally – played by Sandra Bullock – from Practical Magic. I’ve never read the book by Alice Hoffman, but I do adore the movie. Sally is a cynical and witty witch who hates that she is one. It’s done nothing but make her life full of hardship. However, her story arc makes you fall in love with the art of magic. Especially the group scenes at the end of the movie.

Hermione Granger from Harry Potter

A classic fan favourite. Hermione Granger is the epitome of a favourite film witch. I don’t know any girl growing up who didn’t want to be Hermione Granger at some point. Whether because she’s played by Emma Watson and she’s stunning, to the book version being so self-certain and clever. Harry would not have even gotten to the end of Book 1 without Hermione.

Merlin from Merlin

A slight cheat as I’m thinking about Merlin from the BBC Merlin series, however, this is one wizard that has seen many adaptations throughout history. From Le Morte D’Arthur to The Acts of King Arthur by John Steinbeck.

The White Witch from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Not all witches are good as we discovered with The White Witch in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The character is as cold as her name, and far more evil than any other witches I came across in children’s literature. Except maybe the witches from Witches by Roald Dahl.

Isabel Bigelow from Bewitched

And finally, the 1950s-1960s classic. Fans of the TV series Bewitched will remember the twinkly-nosed Isabel Bigelow. She was witty and naughty, and just what most of us would truly be like if we were witches and wizards in real-life.
