Upcoming Greek Myth Retellings 2023

I am so excited to share my latest post on upcoming Greek Myth retellings 2023. I try to do at least one of these posts each year, and there are so many new books to share in 2023.

From retellings about Persephone and Atalanta to Medusa, Psyche and Clytemnestra. So many strong amazing women.

Upcoming Greek Myth Retellings 2023

Psyche and Eros by Luna McNamara – 25th May 2023

First up, is a retelling I’m super excited for. I’ve never read anything about Psyche and Eros so I can’t wait to discover their story through a new voice. This has been classed as one of the greatest love stories of all time – a big declaration. Psyche is a greek princess determined to be a warrior, despite societal expectations. Eros is the God of Desire, sent to kill Psyche by Aphrodite, but it appears he gets pricked by an arrow meant for Psyche, meaning his first love will be torn from him forever. Sounds exciting, romantic and heartbreaking all at once.

Clytemnestra by Constanza Casati

I’ve been hearing many things about Clytemnestra by Constanza Casati. I’ve read quite a few books about Clytemnestra and a few from her perspective as an abandoned wife and mother of a murdered daughter. I’m interested to see what Constanza’s take will be.

Atalanta by Jennifer Saint – 13th April 2023

Jennifer Saint returns with her next Greek Myth retelling giving voice to a forgotten heroine. This time the voice belongs to Atalanta, the only female Argonaut who travels with Jason. She is determined to be a legend and show all the men that underestimated her the true extent of her abilities.

Herc by Phoenicia Rogerson – 31st August 2023

When I saw there was a queer retelling of Hercules I basically jumped for joy. Nothing much has been shared about this book yet but I cannot wait to hear more.

House of Odysseus by Claire North – 24th August 2023

The second book in the Songs of Penelope series, following Ithaca. The story follows Penelope’s intervention in the guilt and madness of two kings, post-Trojan War. Orestes has just killed his father Agamemnon and fled to Ithaca. Menelaus, Agamemnon’s brother, has come to kill him. Penelope is the wife of Odysseus who is currently still away having adventures, and she has to deal with these two murderous, mad kings. Sounds intriguing.

The Heroines by Laura Shepperson – 9th February 2023

And finally, The Heroines. Set in Athens, Queen Phaedra has accused her stepson Hippolytus of rape, but it’s the men of Athens who have to determine if she’s telling the truth or not. I can see this book being infuriatingly modern, but for the first time we’re going to hear Phaedra’s side and not her stepson or husband, King Theseus’.

Those are my recommendations for upcoming Greek Myth retellings 2023. What other retellings are coming out that you can’t wait for? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Dear Elle,

My Greek myths retellings has not yet been published. It’s very different compared to the upcoming novels in 2023. Orpheus Incorporated is a collection of eleven short stories that re-imagines Pandora, Hercules, Ganymede, King Midas, Narcissus, The Minotaur etc in a contemporary setting.

I have had other stories published in anthologies and broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and I am also the author of numerous and critically praised collections of poetry.

I would be delighted to email you a copy of Orpheus Incorporated for you to read. It’s an unusual, accessible and entertaining reimagining of iconic myths. Best wishes, Alan
