Ten Things to do on a Rainy Day in London

As Autumn gets into full swing, so-to does the rain. I love a rainy day though, especially a rainy day in London. It’s an excuse to go indoors and do some baking, read a book or watch a TV show. But it’s also an excuse to have a wander through the many museums, shops, and experiences available in London right now.

Here are ten things to do on a rainy day in London.

Ten Things to do on a Rainy Day in London

Visit a bookshop

There are fantastic bookshops in London. From second-hand bookshops like Any Amount of Books on the Charing Cross Road to Independent bookstores like Daunt Baunts in Marylebone. If they have a cafe, which a few do, like Waterstones Piccadilly, you can spend hours browsing and reading.

Go to the Everyman Cinema

If you get caught in the rain, head to the Everyman Cinema and watch a new movie with some popcorn and a fizzy drink. A relaxing treat to escape and forget the word.

Head to the Barbican conservatory

You’ll typically have to plan this trip, but there are a few on-the-day tickets available. It’s a great place to hang out on a rainy day. The conservatory houses over 1,500 species of plants, but there are also stone ponds with variations of Koi.

Visit a museum

There are plenty of museums in London that are free or cheap to access on a rainy day. From the Natural History Museum and Science Museum in West Kensington to the Postal Museum in Holborn and the Sherlock Holmes museum near Baker Street.

Hang out at a London Pub

From Ian McKellan’s owned pub The Grapes – where you can see Gandalf’s staff – in Limehouse, to Ye Olde Cock Tavern on Fleet Street, which Samuel Pepys and Charles Dickens frequented.

Go to a Board Game Cafe

There are quite a few board game cafes in London, my favourite is the cafe in the Waterloo arches. They serve great Mexican food and drinks, and many games are available to play with friends and family.

See a show

It’s London! There are so many wonderful shows to go and see. From popular shows like Hamilton and Wicked to off-west end shows like Shit-Faced Shakespeare and the Comedy Store.

Have a Cream Tea

There are so many cosy cafes in London for afternoon cream tea. If you want fancy then you can head to the Savoy or the Shard, but there are plenty of other places. I highly recommend Lady Dinah’s Cat Cafe in Shoreditch, afternoon tea, and cats – perfect!

Explore the markets

From Spitalfields to Leadenhall, there are plenty of marketplaces in London undercover. I really enjoy Brick Lane markets, there are some fantastic stalls selling vintage jewelry and clothes. Camden is also great for a day out. You never know what you might find.

There are plenty of immersive experiences in London right now. From the Guy Fawkes experience, under the Tower Bridge of the Strangers Things experience. You can even head slightly out of London to the Warner Bros Studio in Leavesden to visit the Harry Potter Studios. Great times to be had all around.

  1. The markets in London are just something else. I especially love an afternoon tea on a rainy day, with a piano playing in the background. I love London, hoping to explore more in the next year. Great post makes me want to get on the train now and visit. 🙂
