Series I Will Not Finish

Before I jump into this post I want to make it clear that I have nothing against these book series. A lot of people I know love them. But for various reasons, these are series I will not finish.

Series I Will Not Finish

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I read the first few books of this massive fantasy series when the TV adaptation was first airing. They are pretty good, and you can’t criticise George for his descriptive world-building. That being said, with no end in sight – despite the TV show finishing (badly!) – I don’t want to read to the very end of what’s been published, only to have to wait for years. Possibly decades! So I’m cutting out early.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Myer

I read Cinder in my second year of university, and whilst I enjoyed it I didn’t pick up the second book in the series. As such, I doubt I’ll ever do so. It’s been too long since I read the first to remember most of the story and unless I suddenly get the urge to go back and pick up the first book I doubt I’ll be finishing this series.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

I read the first four books in this series and I regret it. In my opinion, they got steadily worst as they went on, and by the time the last book in the series was released I had had enough. Cheesy, over-written, and stereotypical tropes which I cannot get behind.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

After the series first aired, I devoured the first book in this historical/time-travel series and I loved it. It’s really well written, despite its unbelievable concept. However, as much as I enjoyed the book, the TV series was such a strong adaptation that I didn’t feel the need to read the rest. Also, I didn’t want to spoil any of the upcoming dramas. I may one day decide to read this whole series, but not until the TV show is well and truly over.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Like many in the book-reading community, I enjoyed the first book in the Beautiful Creatures series a few years ago. But then I read the second and that was enough to stop me from reading the third or fourth. I’ve yet to meet anyone who’s read past book 2. It’s a car crash in a book. Not good.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

I admit I was highly intrigued by the concept of Ransom Riggs’ series about peculiar children. It’s hard to explain, but it was inspired by strange photos of children in the Victorian and Edwardian period that the author had collected. However, whilst the background of the story is great I just didn’t care enough to pick up book 2.

Anne of Green Gables by L. Maud Montgomery

And finally, a book series I’ve really enjoyed. So why am I not picking up the rest of the books? I read the first book in the series, quickly followed by the second, and whilst I may read the third book I doubt I’ll go any further in the series. Apparently, L. Maud Montgomery’s stories change in tone, and from what I hear the morals of the day begin to shine through. Not my cuppa tea.

But that’s that. Those are the series I will not finish, at least not for a very long-time. After all, you can never say never. What book series are you unlikely to finish? Let me know in the comments below.
