Best Films About Writers

As a writer, I do love to watch films about writers. I find them inspiring when I’m struggling to find my mojo when writing my own work. Many of them are period dramas as there aren’t many contemporary films about modern-day writers, as yet.

Here is a list of some of the best films about writers available to watch now.

Best Films About Writers

Miss Potter

First up is my favourite film about a writer, Miss Potter. Miss Potter is about Beatrix Potter, the famous children’s author behind The Tales of Peter Rabbit and many others. Renee Zellweger is brilliant as Beatrix Potter, and the untold love story is heartbreaking. My favourite element is the way the illustrations are incorporated into the plot so we see the inner workings of Beatrix Potter’s mind.

Bright Star

Bright Star inspired me to write my novel My Mr KeatsThis biographical drama is about John Keats and his love affair with Fanny Brawne. Keats died when he was in his mid-twenties and Fanny was obsessed with him. Their love affair was brief, passionate and entirely platonic. And it shone through in his poetry.

Finding Neverland

J.M. Barrie is the playwright and author of Peter Pan and the various tales within the series. This biographical movie – with some poetic licence – explains how J.M. Barrie got his inspiration from the Llewelyn Davies boys and ultimately ended up adopting them with further tragic circumstances. The movie makes the whole scenario a lot more innocent than it was, but it’s still a beautiful film with great performances from Freddie Highmore and Johnny Depp.

Testament of Youth

Testament of Youth isn’t my favourite film about a writer, but I still find it inspiring. Vera Brittain was a determined young lady who fought her way into Oxford University before becoming a nurse in World War One. The love of her life tragically died before they were married, and she lost her beloved brother, but Vera didn’t stop writing or pursuing her dreams.

Becoming Jane

Jane Austen was not a particularly likeable person, but she wrote the best romances of the time and put the genre on the map for many in the 19th century. Jane Austen’s own romantic life was not great. This film tells the story of her short love affair with Thomas Lefroy.

Collette

Collette was an extremely popular and famous French writer who wrote the beloved Claudine series, although her husband took the credit for many years. Collette the movie tells the story of how her unsuccessful husband stole her books for himself, whilst Collette struggled to write whilst having affairs with numerous men and women.

Vita and Virginia

And finally, a movie about the writer Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf and their famous love affair. It’s a beautiful portrayal of their tempestuous and passionate love affair, as well as their separate writing careers.
