As we approach the end of the month, it’s time for another Best Books Beginning with… post. Today’s focus is on the best books beginning with H.

These are the books I have read to date and recommend.

Best Books Beginning with H

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

This list would be very strange if I didn’t include Harry Potter. Whilst I’m not a fan of J.K. Rowling anymore, these books are more important that the author. They encapsulate my childhood and are my biggest comfort reads. I’ve read them every year since I was 15 and will continue to do so.

Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell

Any fans of William Shakespeare should read Hamnet, not because it’s about Shakespeare – because really it isn’t – but to understand the life of those who ‘loved’ Shakespeare. Maggie O’Farrell writes with such flair and aestheticism that it is like you are in Shakespeare’s Cottage visiting Agnes Shakespeare and the family. It’s a heartbreaking story of grief and loss but touched with hope and the power of women.

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

This year I read three of the four volumes in the Heartstopper series, and I devoured the Heartstopper TV series on Netflix. It is a comfort read to a T. Every volume of this graphic novel is simply lovely. You’ll feel warm and fuzzy as you want Nick and Charlie’s relationship to develop.

The History Boys by Alan Bennett

My favourite play of all time. This immensely clever play is one of the all-time greats. The writing is spectacular, the performance of the original cast – which you can watch on YouTube or in the film adaptation – is perfect and the storyline is incredibly powerful. I’ve yet to see it performed live, but if production ever comes to the West End again I will definitely go and see it.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

For a powerful feminist read, I recommend Homegoing. This novel focuses initially on two sisters: Effia and Esi and then follows their descendants, as one of them is a slave and the other is a slave trader’s wife.

How to be a Heroine by Samantha Ellis

This non-fiction book is perfect for fans of books about books. Samantha Ellis went on a pilgrimage with a friend and they have an argument over which heroine was better Jane Eyre or Cathy Earnshaw. So began the idea for this book, looking into the different heroines of fiction and who ultimately were the strongest heroines.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

And finally, the first book in the Hunger Games series. I adore this series. This book was the first book in my reading history that I read a book cover to cover within one evening. The introduction to the dystopian world of Panem and the characters of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark was utterly immersive and I loved – odd for a dystopian – being in the world.

I would go so far as to say that books beginning with H are clearly my all-time favourites. I should read more! What are your favourite books beginning with H? Let me know in the comments below.
