Best Books Beginning with G

It’s time to carry on with my Best Books Beginning with series. Today’s recommendations are best books beginning with G.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

For fans of high fantasy fiction, and fantasy TV series, you already know all about A Game of Thrones. The first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series sets the scene for this epic series. Shocking and minutely detailed, it’s very well done and exciting to read.

The Gender Games by Juno Dawson

Juno Dawson is an inspiration to many, myself included. This non-fiction book focuses on the societal differences in genders, from Juno’s perspective as a transgender woman. A really fascinating read, and one I would recommend to everyone.

Girl A by Abigail Dean

Girl A is exceptionally dark but incredibly readable. Focusing on a family of siblings, now in their thirties, and the treatment of their parents in their childhood. It’s a story of a cult and growing up in an abusive household. What do you do when you get out and grow older, only to be given the house where all these horrors happened?

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo

The Man Booker Prize-winning novel, which should have won outright in my opinion. This easy-to-read novel focuses on 12 different characters from the beginning of the 20th Century to the modern day, across Britain.  It’s simply brilliant.

Girls Will Be Girls by Emer O’Toole

For any readers of feminist non-fiction, I highly recommend you read Girls Will Be Girls by Emer O’Toole. This non-fiction read looks into what it means to ‘be a girl’ in today’s society, from the pantomime of dressing the ‘right way’ and wearing the right kind of make-up and shaving your armpits and doing all the things that society tells us women should do. It’s funny, accessible and features a lot of Emer’s own experiences as a woman who rebels against the norm. Very enjoyable.

Goodbye Mr Chips by James Hilton

If you’re after a short, British classic, then read Goodbye Mr Chips. This tiny novella is about a teacher at the start of the 20th century, who is beloved by all at Brookfield Grammar School where he works until the end of his life. It’s warm and endearing if a little dated now.

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai

A hard-hitting novel about Aids that is immensely readable and so important. I recommended this to my book club during the lockdown and we all adored it. It will rip your heart out but it’s so hard to put down and you become friends with the main characters because they’re so lovable and innocent.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

And finally, a historical fiction novel that comes across, initially, as soft and cosy, but really packs a punch. Written in letter and diary format, it’s really quick to read and you love the cast of characters by the end. But the story focuses on a very dark time in British history.
