Best Books Beginning with A

I thought I would start a new blog series today, Best Books Beginning with… Today, I’m sharing my recommendations of the best books beginning with A, based on the books I’ve read to date.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

First up is a mystery classic, from the queen of crime Agatha Christie. And Then There Were None is her most famous and strongest standalone. Previously named a title inappropriate for the 21st century, it’s a brilliant and pacy read with a highly satisfying ending.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Another classic, this time a children’s classic. Anne of Green Gables is the epitome of a book that feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s beautifully written with gorgeous descriptions and the character of Anne is flawed but exceedingly loveable.

Another Life by Jodie Chapman

A recent read of mine, but a new favourite. Another Life is a contemporary story set in Kent – my hometown in fact – and follows a set of teenagers who work together at the cinema one summer. It’s got some stunning themes within it, looking at young love, parental love and the effect of religion on relationships. If you enjoyed One Day by David Nicholls, I think you’ll enjoy this.

As You Wish by Cary Elwes

I’m a big Princess Bride fan, so when I found out that Cary and the rest of the surviving cast had added anecdotes and descriptions of their time on set to a book, I had to read it. And I loved every second! It’s hilarious, heartwarming and makes you want to watch the movie immediately. So much fun.

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Another classic, this time a ridiculously clever novella that is an allegory for the Russian Revolution, set on a farm. That sounds incredibly boring, in fact, it’s an emotional and strangely addictive rollercoaster. You’ll read it in a day.

Atonement by Ian McEwan

A modern classic, Atonement is a marmite book and for me, it’s not a favourite. However, it is one of the best. It’s a weird one where the story is very good but the writing is sometimes a bit dry for my taste. I’ve read it three times, as it’s a book I should love, but every time I’m left a bit wanting. However, it is still worth the accolade of a modern classic.

Animals by Emma Jane Unsworth

And finally, a strong, dry-witted contemporary story about friendship, self-discovering and growing up. This story follows two friends, who are each other’s worst enemies. They party too much, egg each other on into stupid decisions and are ultimately falling out of love with each other, but desperate to stay together. It’s a fascinating portrayal of friendship.

And that’s it for my list of the best books beginning with A. Which books would you recommend? Let me know in the comments below.
